Relocation
Although numerous sources listed his place of birth as the State of IL, the bank architect Herman Henry Winner was likely born in Badbergen, Bersenbrück, Hannover, Germany on 04/03/1874. Records indicated his baptism on 05/05/1874 in that city, the son of Hermann Heinrich Winner and Anna Catharina Margaretha Winner. The 1900 US Census located Herman Winner living with his wife Lily at 22 Norfolk Street in San Francisco, CA. This census listed his occupation as "cabinet maker." (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Year: 1900; Census Place: San Francisco, San Francisco, California; Roll: 102; Page: 3; Enumeration District: 0095, accessed 04/08/2025.)
Some sources indicated that his first name was "Henry," reflecting, perhaps, his emphasis of this more English-sounding name during a period of anti-German sentiment in the 1910s.
By 1910, after his first wife Lily's death, Winner lodged with Max and Gertrude Lichtenstein at 1318 Haight Street in San Francisco. His wife Lily was not listed by the census as living with him at the time. Max worked as a bookkeeper at a woodworking company in San Francisco. Although he lived and worked in San Francisco for his early years in CA, Winner changed his place of residence to Ross in Marin County during the 1910s. He resided on the same street in that town for about forty years, before moving to Kentfield at the end of his life.
In 09/1918, he resided in Ross, CA. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Registration State: California; Registration County: Marin County Source Information Ancestry.com. U.S., World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations Inc, 2005, accessed 04/08/2025.) The 1920 US Census found Winner residing on Shady Lane in Ross with his wife and two daughters.
He lived on Shady Lane near Bolinas Avenue in 1930. The Winner house had an approximate value of $10,000 in that year, more than most surrounding dwellings. A nearby resident was James A. Magee (born c. 1874 in CA), also an architect, who lived at 9 Bolinas Avenue. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Year: 1930; Census Place: Ross, Marin, California; Page: 2B; Enumeration District: 0010; FHL microfilm: 2339911, accessed 04/08/2025.)
In 1953, he and Alma resided on Shady Lane in Ross. CA. (See San Rafael, California, City Directory, 1952-1953, p. 278.)
Winner diedat the Norman Rest Home in Kentfield, CA, at the age of 88.(See Ancestry.com, Source Information Ancestry.com. California, U.S., San Francisco Area Funeral Home Records, 1895-1985 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations, Inc., 2010, accessed 04/08/2025.)
Parents
The architect's father was also named Herman H. Winner.
Anna M. Mueller was his mother. The 1900 US Census indicated that both of his parents had immigrated to the US from Germany. The 1930 US Census listed his father being from Holland, and his mother, Germany.
Spouse
Winner married twice during his lifetime.
He wed Lily Markley (born 09/04/1875 in OH-d. 09/25/1903 in San Francisco, CA) c. 1897. She died about six years later of chronic kidney disease in San Francisco's Taylor Sanatorium. He later married Mary Alma McPhun (born 12/13/1883 in CA-d. 12/02/1962 in Marin County, CA) by about 1910. According to the 1920 US Census, Alma's father had been Chilean (whose native language was English), and her mother, English. Herman was about ten years older than Alma.
Children
He and Alma had two daughters, Margarethe Winner Anderson (born 08/11/1911 in CA-d. 10/21/1984 in Marin County, CA) and Elizabeth Helen Winner Murray (born 01/09/1913 in Los Angeles County, CA-d. 01/21/2010 in CA)
Margarethe married Harry C. Anderson on 08/16/1958 in Marin County, CA. (See Ancestry.com, Source Information Ancestry.com. California, U.S., Marriage Index, 1949-1959 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations, Inc., 2013, accessed 04/08/2025.)
