Grant as a "Draftsman" in its records, but only sporadically, 1910, 1911, 1913, 1915, and 1917, was the place of his employment listed. Grant moved to Room #312 in the Lloyd Building by 1940 and continued to work here in 1942. William R. Grant lived at 4540 2nd Avenue NE from at least 1919 until 1940. The house had an approximate value of $5,000 in 1930, an average sum for a residence at this time. Parents

His father was George Grant, his mother, Carrie Richardson. George Grant, was born in Windsor, ON, Canada on 05/09/1862; he migrated first to Detroit, MI, where he stayed from 1884 until 04/1907. Carrie Louise Richardson, who was born c. 1867 in NJ, managed the home and raised their children. She and George married on 09/23/1884 in Detroit.

He and Carrie had six children in total, four of whom survived past 1910, who were all born in Detroit. They were George D. (b. 07/07/1887, who in 1910 worked as an electrician), William, Alan G. (b. 12/22/1902-d 12/23/1987 in Seattle), and Helen G. Langlow (b. 03/27/1905-d. 08/14/1986).

George came to Seattle on 04/10/1907, and worked as an optician and jeweler. His firm was known as George Grant Optical Company, and in 1942, Alan G. Grant, ran the business with Bernard Commerce. (See Seattle, Washington, City Directory, 1942, p. 421.)

Spouse

He married Gail Georgine Austin (1889-1979), who was born in Bellingham, WA, but attended Lincoln High School in Seattle. They married 02/11/1911 in Seattle at All Saints' Episcopal Church.

Children

William and Gail Grant had one child, Austin Grant (1918-2013), who also became an architect and worked with his father in the firm William R. Grant and Son, Architects, and who also was a partner in the celebrated Seattle firm of Grant, Copeland, Chervenak.
