Charles Franklin Masten was born in Holt County, NE. By 1900, the Mastens had moved to Corona, CA. To make ends meet, the family took in boarders. At the time that the 1900 US Census was taken, Lydia Mann (born c. 10/1878 in CA, who worked as a fruit picker), Lulu Mann (born c. 09/1884 in CA, listed as a "servant,"), and George W. Burke (born 09/1874 in NY, who was a baker), lived with the Mastens. He lived on his family's ranch near Klamath Falls, OR, in 1910. At this time, the household consisted of his parents, two siblings, a hired hand, Gin Duey (born c. 1854 in China), and two boarders, James B. Maguire (born c. 1889 in IL) and Eugene C. Muse (born c. 1873 in VA). He lived at 210 San Marcos Street in San Francisco in 1940 with his wife and son. The house had an estimated value of $10,000 at the time.

Masten died in San Francisco, CA, at the age of 87. His last residence was in the 94123 zip code of San Francisco.

According to the 1900 US Census, William operated a restaurant in Corona, CA. Ten years later, William ran his own ranch near Klamath Falls, OR.

He had two siblings, John Wesley Masten (born 07/01/1884 in NE-d. 08/07/1976 in Fresno, CA), and Dorothy Masten Hewitt (born 05/29/1898 in CA-d. 10/29/1985 in San Jose, CA).


Charles F. Masten, Sr., married Wilcy Ann Ross Masten (born 10/31/1896 in CA-d. 02/26/1991 in Sonoma County, CA) in 1918.


Masten had one child, Charles Franklin Masten, Jr., (born 07/20/1920 in San Francisco, CA-d. 03/23/2003 in Lompoc, CA). He joined in the US military during World War II, serving between 09/08/1942 and 04/08/1946.
