Personal

Relocation

Carlo Luigi Mastopietro was born in Jacksonville, IL, on 06/17/1915. As per the 1920 US Census, Carl Mastopietro resided in Jacksonville with his uncle Nick Mastopietro (born c. 1889 in Italy), his wife Victoria Iademarco (born c. 1896 in WI), and his parents Louis and Anna Mastopietro at 1056 North Fayette Street. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Year: 1920; Census Place: Jacksonville Ward 2, Morgan, Illinois; Roll: T625_395; Page: 6A; Enumeration District: 123, accessed 07/21/2022.) The architect's family relocated to Southern CA sometime during the 1920s.

The Mastopietros owned a residence at 7700 Halldale Avenue in Los Angeles in 1930. This residence had an approximate value of $6,000 according to the 1930 US Census, consistent with those of neighboring houses. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Year: 1930; Census Place: Los Angeles, Los Angeles, California; Page: 26B; Enumeration District: 0504; FHL microfilm: 2339886, accessed 07/21/2022.)

In 1938, he lived with his parents at 946 North Croft Avenue in Los Angeles. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation California State Library; Sacramento, California; Great Register of Voters, 1938, accessed 06/17/2022.)

He resided at 2023 Kerwood Avenue in Los Angeles on 10/16/1940, the date that he registered for the World War II draft. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation National Archives at St. Louis; St. Louis, Missouri; WWII Draft Registration Cards for California, 10/16/1940-03/31/1947; Record Group: Records of the Selective Service System, 147; Box: 1143, accessed 06/17/2022.) The US Census of that year indicated that Mastopietro and his wife owned the house at 2023 Kenwood that had an approximate value of $6,500.

He changed his name legally from "Mastopietro" to "Maston" probably in mid-to-late 1944. He registered to vote in 1944 as "Carl Mastopietro" and remained living with his wife Virginia at 2023 Kerwood Avenue. Social Security records indicated that his wife had become "Virginia Maston" by 10/1944. (See Ancestry.com, Source Information Ancestry.com. U.S., Social Security Applications and Claims Index, 1936-2007 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations, Inc., 2015, accessed 07/21/2022.) He had become "Carl Maston" according to US Marine Corps records of 07/1945. Maston died in Los Angeles County, CA, at the age of 76. His last residence was in the 90069 zip code of West Hollywood, CA.

Parents

The 1920 US Census indicated that Carl's father Louis Mastopietro (born c. 1881 in Italy) worked as a foreman in the coat shop of a clothing factory, probably that of J. Capps & Sons, Ltd., a company that lasted between 1885 and 1978. Louis's brother, Nick, likely worked in the same factory as a tailor. The census recorded that Louis immigrated to the US in 1900, and was naturalized in 1912, while Nick came in 1907 and was naturalized in 1917. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Year: 1920; Census Place: Jacksonville Ward 2, Morgan, Illinois; Roll: T625_395; Page: 6A; Enumeration District: 123, accessed 07/21/2022.) By 1930, Louis worked as a tailor in a Los Angeles clothing store. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Year: 1930; Census Place: Los Angeles, Los Angeles, California; Page: 26B; Enumeration District: 0504; FHL microfilm: 2339886, accessed 07/21/2022.)

Both Louis and Nick married women from WI. Carl's mother was Anna Engeln (born 07/13/1885 in WI-d. 12/05/1942 in Los Angeles, CA). Both of Anna's parents William Englen (born 04/03/1840 in Germany-d. 12/21/1916 in Milwaukee, WI) and Catherine Irsfeld (born 08/23/1847 in Schonecken, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany-d. 06/03/1920 in Milwaukee, WI) had been born in Germany, and she was one of nine children that they had had, only six of whom remained alive as noted in the 1900 US Census. The Engelns lived at 620 6th Street in Milwaukee, WI, in 1900. In that year, William Engeln worked as a dyer. (See Ancetry.com, Source Citation Year: 1900; Census Place: Milwaukee Ward 6, Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Roll: 1801; Page: 5; Enumeration District: 0039; FHL microfilm: 1241801, acessed 07/21/2022 and Ancestry.com, Source Citation Year: 1930; Census Place: Los Angeles, Los Angeles, California; Page: 26B; Enumeration District: 0504; FHL microfilm: 2339886, accessed 07/21/2022.)

The 1940 US Census reported that Louis had had a 5th-grade education, while Anna had completed two years of high school in WI. Carl and his younger sister Cathryn Rose Mastopietro (born c. 1922 in Los Angeles, CA-d. 05/29/1977) both were able to attend college. In that year, the Mastopietros were prosperous enough to maintain a household servant, Emma Gandreau (born c. 1877 in SD). (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Year: 1940; Census Place: Los Angeles, Los Angeles, California; Roll: m-t0627-00404; Page: 63A; Enumeration District: 60-188, accessed 07/21/2022.)

Cathryn completed Fairfax High School with the Class of 1939 and UCLA, graduating in 1943. (See Fairfax High School Colonial Yearbook, 1939, p. 55 and University of California, Los Angeles, The Southern Campus Yearbook, 1943, p. 75.) In 1942, Louis Mastopietro, still working as a tailor, lived at 946 North Croft Avenue in the Hollywood neighborhood, while Cathryn lived next door at 948 North Croft. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation California State Library; Sacramento, California; Great Register of Voters, 1942, accessed 07/21/2022.)

He wed Virginia May Poston (born 01/11/1917 in Los Angeles, CA-d. 05/25/1994). The 1940 US Census indicated that Virginia had completed three years of college and that she, like her husband, also worked as an architectural draftsperson at the time. He traveled with her to Europe in 1955.
