Leroy and his father, Benjamin B. Hulbert relocated to California in 1903 from Saint Louis, where the elder man operated a photography business, Gemelli Studios. In Los Angeles, Leroy carried on his father's occupation, and was, in 1915, commissioned by Charles Sumner Greene and Henry Mather Greene to photograph their architectural output to that point.
