Born in Buffalo, IL, Hunter lived in Mechanicsburg, IL, in 1910, another very small town in Sangamon County, on the outskirts of Springfield, IL. His family had moved to Redlands, CA, by 1920, when Paul was 13. They resided on Palm Avenue here, where they owned a house. Guy Hunter raised oranges as did his immediate neighbors. Hunter resided for a long period in Los Angeles, CA; his last residence was in the 77077 zip code of Houston, Harris County, TX.

His father, Guy L. Hunter worked in 1910 as a farmer in Mechanicsburg, IL. Guy's parents both had come from IL. His mother was Clara C. Hunter, a homemaker. Her father was Irish, her mother was born in PA. Guy and Clara had four children living at home in 1910: Clarence L. (born c. 1895 in IL), Keith C. (born c. 1897 in IL), Eugenia E. (born c. 1904 in IL) and Paul, the youngest.
