Principal, Koichi Kawana, Landscape Architect, Los Angeles, CA. In his practice as a garden designer, Kawana laid out Sancho-En at Chicago's Botanical Garden, the Japanese Friendship Garden at Balboa Park, San Diego, CA, and the Japanese Garden at the Donald C. Tillman Water Reclamation Plant, Van Nuys, Los Angeles, CA (1984), and the Seiwa-en Japanese Garden in the Missouri Botanical Garden in Saint Louis, MO. In 1969, Kawana supervised the restoration of the Hannah Carter Japanese Garden at UCLA following damage caused by heavy rains.

Kawana was born on the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido. In 1951, he graduated from the Yokohama Municipal University.

Kawana traveled aboard the liner, the Hawaii Maru from Yokohama, Japan, to San Francisco, CA between 06/18/1952-06/29/1952; his destination at this time was 709 24th Street, Santa Monica, CA. Kawana's entry in the 1955 UCLA Bruin Yearbook noted that he came from Otsu, Yokosuka, Japan. (He probably attended high school at Yokosukauotsu.)
