Relocation

Patterson was born in rural Jefferson County, NY. The 1860 US Census located Daniel living with his family in Lyme, NY, a town about 93 miles due north of Syracuse, on Lake Ontario, where his parents operated a farm. The household consisted of his parents Tompkins and Susan, and his brothers Clarence and George. The family owned real estate worth about $600 and had other assets of about $500. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation The National Archives in Washington D.C.; Record Group: Records of the Bureau of the Census; Record Group Number: 29; Series Number: M653; Residence Date: 1860; Home in 1860: Lyme, Jefferson, New York; Roll: M653_762; Page: 210; Family History Library Film: 803762, accessed 05/23/2023.) The New York State Census of 1865 counted the Pattersons as living in Brownville, NY. Tompkins was listed as being a ship's carpenter at this time. They were living with Susan's mother Lucy Mack (born c. 1805 in Warren County, NY) and her sister Margaret Mack (born c. 1827 in Saint Lawrence County, NY) on the Mack Family farm. This farm had a value of about $500 in 06/1865. (See Ancestry.com, Source Information Ancestry.com. New York, U.S., State Census, 1865 [database on-line]. Lehi, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations, Inc., 2014, accessed 05/23/2023.)

The 1870 US Census listed the Pattersons farming on acreage near Greenwood, MN. Real estate wealth had risen to $2,000 by this time, with other assets still tallying about $500. The family had a boarder, Margaret Mack (born c. 1827 in NY), who worked in a local woolen factory. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Year: 1870; Census Place: Greenwood, Hennepin, Minnesota; Roll: T132_5; Page: 150, accessed 05/23/2023.) As per the 1875 Minnesota State Census, the Patterson continued to reside in the Hennepin County town of Greenwood. At this time, the family contained both parents and five children. Judging from the places of birth and birthdates of his younger siblings and their presence on the 1865 NY State Census, the Patterson moved to MN sometime between 1865 and 1868. (See Ancestry.com, Source Information: Minnesota, U.S., Territorial and State Censuses, 1849-1905 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations Inc, 2007. Reels 1-47 and 107-164, accessed 05/23/2023.)

In 1880, the Pattersons remained in Greenwood, MN, where the family continued farming. The household included nine persons: his parents, all of his siblings and likely a farm laborer, P.W. Louinis (born c. 1833 in NY). (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Year: 1880; Census Place: Greenwood, Hennepin, Minnesota; Roll: 623; Page: 33D; Enumeration District: 210, accessed 05/23/2023.)

By 1882, Patterson had left his family farm in Greenwood, gotten married to Lucy Kittridge and moved to Minneapolis.(See Ancestry.com, Source Information Ancestry.com. Minnesota, U.S., Marriages Index, 1849-1950 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations, Inc., 2011, accessed 05/24/2023.) A year later, they resided at 229 NE 4th Street, where Daniel worked as a carpenter. (See Minneapolis, Minnesota, City Directory, 1883, p. 447.) Two years later, Patterson lived with his first family at 1505 NE Jefferson Street in Minneapolis, where he worked not just as a carpenter but as a building contractor. (See Minneapolis, Minnesota, City Directory, 1885, p. 588.)

In 1890, Patterson lived on the "east side of Rainier two blocks north of Chestnut" in Seattle.

The architect relocated to Santa Clara, CA, by 1892, where he registered to vote on 03/12/1892. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation California State Library; Sacramento, California; Great Registers, 1866-1898; Collection Number: 4-2A; CSL Roll Number: 125; FHL Roll Number: 977289, accessed 05/24/2023.)

He moved to San Francisco by 1893, and resided at 404 Ellis Street in 1896. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation California State Library; Sacramento, California; Great Registers, 1896; Collection Number: 4-2A; CSL Roll Number: 100; FHL Roll Number: 977257, accessed 05/23/2023.) The 1900 US Census indicated that Patterson and his wife of three years Susan lived at 404 Larkin Street, but this was probably a mistake, and he remained at 404 Ellis.

By 1908, the architect and his wife dwelled at 69 Divisadero Street in San Francisco. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation California State Library; Sacramento, California; Great Register of Voters, 1908, accessed 05/24/2023 and Ancestry.com, Source Citation Year: 1910; Census Place: San Francisco Assembly District 34, San Francisco, California; Roll: T624_97; Page: 4b; Enumeration District: 0090; FHL microfilm: 1374110, accessed 05/23/2023.) They remained at this location in 1913. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation California State Library; Sacramento, California; Great Register of Voters, 1913, accessed 05/24/2023.)

He and his third wife Adele dwelled at 90 Divisidero Street in San Francisco in 1925, a year before his death. (See San Francisco, California, City Directory, 1925, p. 1460.)

Patterson died in San Francisco, CA, on 12/08/1926. (See Ancestry.com, Source Information Ancestry.com. California, U.S., Death Index, 1905-1939 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations, Inc., 2013, accessed 05/24/2023.)

Parents

Tompkins Jared Patterson (born c. 1824 in Jefferson County, NY-d. 06/21/1914 in Tacoma, WA), a ship's carpenter and farmer, and his wife Susan Mack (born c. 03/1833 in Jefferson County, NY), had six children, D.J. being the second oldest. During the Civil War, Tompkins worked as a ship's carpenter, enlisting on 01/21/1864 at Brownsville, NY and was discharged from military service in 08/1865. (See Ancestry.com, Source Information: U.S., Naval Enlistment Rendezvous, 1855-1891 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations, Inc., 2014. Original data: United States, Naval Enlistment Rendezvous, 1855-1891. Salt Lake City, Utah: FamilySearch, 2013, accessed 05/23/2023 and Ancestry.com, Source Citation New York State Archives; Albany, New York; Town Clerks´ Registers of Men Who Served in the Civil War, ca 1861-1865; Collection Number: (N-Ar)13774; Box Number: 28; Roll Number: 16, accessed 05/23/2023.) There is some question as to whether Tompkins joined the military in 01/1863 or 01/1864. A document of 1890 listed it as the former, while other documents of the 1860s listed it as 1864. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation The National Archives at Washington, D.C.; Washington, D.C.; Special Schedules of the Eleventh Census (1890) Enumerating Union Veterans and Widows of Union Veterans of the Civil War; Series Number: M123; Record Group Title: Records of the Department of Veterans Affairs; Record Group Number: 15; Census Year: 1890, accessed 05/24/2023.)

Tompkins's father was Daniel T. Patterson, his mother, Katherine Dingman.

Daniel's siblings included Clarence Patterson (born c. 1855 in NY), George Patterson (born c. 1860 in NY), Minnie Lucy Patterson Snell (born 08/31/1863 in Watertown, NY-d. 07/17/1952 in Portland, OR), Henry Patterson (born c. 1868 in MN) and Lillie Belle Patterson (spelled variously as "Lillybelle" and "Lillebell," born c. 03/1877 in MN).

Tompkins Patterson had moved from his farm in Greenwood to Minneapolis by 1890.

By 1900, Tompkins and Susan had moved West, living in Tacoma, WA. living with their daughter Minnie and her husband William Snell (born c. 1856 in IL), a physician. Daniel's youngest sister Lillie Belle also lived with the Snells, and was listed also as being a 23-year-old physician on this census form. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Year: 1900; Census Place: Tacoma Ward 1, Pierce, Washington; Roll: 1748; Page: 13; Enumeration District: 0163, accessed 05/23/2023.)

Spouse

Daniel J. Patterson married three times. He wed his first wife Lucy M. Kittredge (born c. 1860 in OH) on 02/23/1882 in Minneapolis, MN. (See Ancestry.com, Source Information Ancestry.com. Minnesota, U.S., Marriages Index, 1849-1950 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations, Inc., 2011, accessed 05/24/2023.) The 1885 Minnesota State Census listed Daniel, Lucy and a two-year-old son Adelbert living in Minneapolis. (See Ancestry.com, Source Information Ancestry.com. Minnesota, U.S., Territorial and State Censuses, 1849-1905 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations Inc, 2007, accessed 05/24/2023.)

The Minneapolis City Directory, 1895, listed Lucy as being the "widow" of Daniel J. Patterson, and indicated that she worked for a street railway in that city. Women often listed themselves as "widows" rather than endure the shame that broken marriages carried form them in the 19th and early 20th centuries. (See Minneapolis, Minnesota, City Directory, 1895, p. 807.) In any event, this marriage ended in either divorce or desertion.

His second marriage was to Amy Julia Patterson (born c. 11/1872 in Canada) in about 1897. The 1910 US Census indicated that she had migrated to the US from Canada in 1879. Her father was Mexican and her mother English Canadian. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Year: 1910; Census Place: San Francisco Assembly District 34, San Francisco, California; Roll: T624_97; Page: 4b; Enumeration District: 0090; FHL microfilm: 1374110, accessed 05/23/2023.)

At age 64, Patterson married the 29-year-old Adele C. Petralli Stone (born c. 1892 in CA-d. 08/1981 in San Francisco, CA) in Marin County, CA, on 03/10/1921. This was likely her second marriage. Children

He and Lucy Patterson had a son Adelbert Kittredge Patterson (born 05/29/1883 in Minneapolis, MN-d. 03/1957 in Saint Joseph County, IN). Few records exist for an "Adelbert Patterson," as he went by the name "Bert."

Bert K. Patterson hopscotched around the Midwest gradually rising in authority in various banking institutions. He began as a clerk in Minneapolis by 1905. (See Ancestry.com, Source Information Ancestry.com. Minnesota, U.S., Territorial and State Censuses, 1849-1905 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations Inc, 2007, accessed 05/24/2023.) He became a bank examiner in Fargo, ND, between 1916 and 1918, a bank examiner by 1920 in Minneapolis, a banker in Chicago, IL, in 1929, an Executive Vice-President for the Guardian Detroit Union Group, Incorporated, in Detroit, MI, by 1930-1931 and the President of the Saint Joseph Bank and Trust Company in South Bend, IN, by 1940. He remained in South Bend for the remainder of his career, until his death in 1957.
