Born in Manchester, NH, Herbert Fiege grew up in a neighborhood filled with immigrant tradesman, machinists, weavers and carpenters. In 1910, the Fiege Family lived at 140 Dartmouth Street, surrounded primarily by Germans (and a few Italians) who generally migrated to the US after 1880. He continued to live at home in 1930, in a residence at 4409 Tujunga Avenue. (The 1930 Census valued it at $5000.) Herbert attended the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, CA, graduating in 1932. In 1940, he lived in a residence at 6659 Greenbush Avenue in Los Angeles with his wife and two children. The house had an estimated value of $2,500 according to the 1940 US Census. He worked continuously in Southern CA from 1946-1970 with Donald Ayres (1940-1985). In 1970, he resided at 15535 Woodcrest Drive, Sherman Oaks, Los Angeles, CA.

His father was Conrad Fiege (born c. 1866 in Hesse-Kassel, Germany), who was a barkeeper according to the 1910 US Census; his mother was Augusta Fiege (born c. 1870 in Schlesien, Germany), a homemaker. The 1910 Census indicated that Conrad came to the US c. 1882, while the 1930 Census said 1889; Augusta entered the country in either 1891 or 1892; they married c. 1892. Herbert had four sisters, two of whom, Margaret (born c. 1894 in NH) and Elise (born c. 1895 in NH), were considerably older. Nearest in age to him was his sister, Milda (born c. 1904 in NH), who was four years older.

He married Loraine Fiege (born c. 1912 In IL). His wife had had one year of high school as noted in the 1940 US Census.

Herbert and Loraine Fiege had two children: Beverly (born c. 1935 in CA) and Kenneth H. (born c. 10/1939 in CA).

SSN: 572-20-5575. The Social Security Death Index identified another Herbert F. Fiege (1909-1994, SSN: 561-50-4466), who lived in CA at the same time as the architect.
