Gilbreth, while working as a brick layer, became fascinated by studying the physical process of laying bricks. He became interested in time-motion studies, utilizing photography. He first sought to understand the motions involved in performing a task, and then to map out and distill these processes to be most efficient. Gilbreth was a prototypical modernist, believing in the power of empirical observation and the concept of improved living through scientific and technological endeavor. He died of a heart attack at age 55 in Montclair, NJ.
