Stem's father, J.H. Stem, was an architect in Indianapolis, IN, with whom he practiced from 1876-1884. Architectural biographer, Henry Withey, noted that he practiced with his father from 1878-1884. (p.570)

According to architectural biographer, Henry Withey, the firm of Reed and Stem designed over 100 railroad stations for various clients.
