Manning (1860-1938) was an employee of Frederick Law Olmsted, Sr., (1822-1903) from 1888 to 1896, and then became a collaborator with his sons, John Charles Olmsted (1852-1920) and Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr., (1870-1957). Manning was a founding member of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA).
