Haines, William, Interior Designer
Haines was a silent screen star who failed to make the transition to talkies, in part because of his overtly gay lifestyle; Haines and his partner Jimmy Shields opened an antique store in 1930, and gradually Haines became one of the top interior designers of the 1930s-1950s in Los Angeles, CA, and is one of the promoters of "Bel Air Modern" furniture and interior design.
Haines was an early "out" gay man in Hollywood; his homosexuality impeded his movie career as a leading man, but he did build a successful career as an interior designer, working mainly for movie industry people in Southern CA.
He was known as "Billy" Haines to clients and friends.
