Commander, US Naval Reserve, Whidbey Island, WA, c. 1971. In 1971, Nelson then a Commander in the US Naval Reserve had a disagreement with the Chehalis-Centralia Airport Board over their proposal to shorten a 5,000-foot, diagonal runway at their airport. His obituary stated: "He earned medals and logged 2,500 flight hours. He remained in the Naval Reserve 20 years, at Whidbey Island Naval Air Station and the former Naval Station Puget Sound at Sand Point." Relocation

Nelson was born in Bremerton, WA, and spent his childhood in this US Navy town. In 1930, the Nelson family lived in a house they owned at 1407 5th Street in Bremerton. This residence and its land had a value of about $3,500 iat the time, an average sum. As noted on the 1930 US Census, most of the Nelson's immediate neighbors worked in various capacities at Bremerton's Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. His background living in Bremerton likely spurred his admiration for military service and his decision to join the US Navy during the Korean War. He matriculated at the University of Washington in 1947, but his education was interrupted by extended Navy service as a pilot during the Korean Conflict. He graduated in 1958. In 1953, Nelson, then an Ensign in the US Navy, got married and resided with his bride Doris WInsett at 2047 Nuuanu Avenue in Honolulu, HI. (See "Doris M. Winsett Becomes Bride in Central Union Church Vows," Honolulu Star-Bulletin, 08/15/1953, p. 14.)

Nelson and his first wife resided at 421 Boxer Road in Honolulu in 1955. One son was born on 02/11/1955, while they lived at this address. (See "Births, Marriages, Deaths," Honolulu Star-Bulletin, 02/17/1955, p. C5.) He may have lived in HI in 1965, as well.

The architect died of a heart attack on 01/08/1997.

Parents

His mother was Gladys Evelyn McCauley (born 02/09/1901 in Spokane, WA-d. 1986), who managed the household. Her mother was E.M. "Jessie" Crone McCauley, her father, a farmer, Charles H. McCauley (born 12/30/1849 in IL-d. 10/22/1932 in CA). She attended Spokane's Lewis and Clark High School in1916. Gladys raised two children, Albert, Jr., and his elder sister, Evelyn Yvonne Nelson Robinson (born c. 1926 in Bremerton, WA). She went by her middle name for most of her life.

Yvonne attended Bremerton High School c. 1942 and wed Clarence A. Robinson on 09/18/1949 in Bremerton, WA. Albert's namesake was Albert William Nelson, Sr., (1898-1984), who worked in 1930 as a machinist at the Bremerton Navy Yard. Albert, Sr.'s parents were both born in Sweden. He wed Sally Nelson c. 1978.

Children

He had four children: Lee Nelson, Mark Nelson, Jeff Moore, and Jennifer Nelson.
