He then moved to Seattle, WA, on to Fairbanks, AK, and then back to Renton, WA. He retired to Anderson Island, WA.

Gonnason had three brothers--John, Walter, and Leonard--and two sisters--Virginia and Eleanor.

His first wife was named Joan; his second wife was Virginia.

He had children: daughters, Meryl, Durlyn, Laurie (died before 2007); sons, Kim, Gary, and Christopher. He also had step-children: Cindy, Marjorie, and Gregory.

Gonnason retired from the Marine Corps as a colonel. Gonnason was a member of Inglewood Golf Club, Fairwood Golf Club, and Rivera Golf Club.
