Arthur Francis "Frank" Mathews was born in Markesan, WI, on 10/01/1860, to an artistically gifted family. His father Julius Case Mathews was an architect, as were his brothers Walter and Edgar.

Arthur Mathews lived with his parents on the north side of Durant Avenue between Broadway and Franklin Street. (See Oakland, California, City Directory, 1878, p. 317.)

In 1892, Arthur Mathews worked as a fine artist and lived at homw with his parents at 1365 Frsnklin Street in Downtown Oakland. (See Oakland, California, City Directory, 1892, p. 351.)

In 1945, he and Lucia lived at 670 Fell Street in San Francisco. Mathews died in San Francisco, CA, at the age of 84 from complications of pancreatic cancer.
