Gibbings was best known for his elegant and simple lines of furniture designed for the Widdicomb Furniture Company of Grand Rapids, MI, from the mid-1940s until 1956. He also designed furniture for the company Saridis, that strongly recalled ancient Greek prototypes. Klismos chairs by Saridis were and are extremely expensive, and remain favorite pieces of interior designers.
