His father was Charles Jefferson Stockwell (born 1857 in WI-d. 1927), his mother, Alice Stuckslager (born 1874 in IA-d. 1951 in Tampa, FL). They married c. 1898, Charles being 18 years Alice's senior.He was the editor of a newspaper in Genoa, NE, in 1910. Alice raised their four children, Harlan L. Stockwell, (born c. 1901 in NE), Florence A. Stockwell, (born c. 1903 in NE), William and Emily Louise Stockwell (born c. 1915 in NE).
Charles worked as a printer in the early 1920s, operating the Stockwell Printing Company in Room #409 of the Stovall-Nelson Building in Tampa, FL.
