Daniel G. Volkmann, Jr., was raised in a wealthy German-American household, the son of Danield G. Volkmann, Sr., who, in 1925, was a director of August Schilling and Company, spice merchants of San Francisco, CA. This company was founded in 1881 by August Schilling and George F. Volkmann, who was a vice-president in 1925. The business was sold to McCormick and Company in 1947.

In 1925, Daniel Volkmann, Jr., lived with his parents in a large residence at at 2780 Broadway in the city's upper-class Pacific Heights neighborhood. (See San Francisco, California, City Directory, 1925, p. 1870.)

Parents

His father Daniel Gustave Volkmann, Sr., (born 09/05/1887 in San Francisco, CA-d. 07/27/1966 in San Francisco, CA), worked in the spice business co-founded by his father George F. Volkmann.

Biographical Notes

Volkmann indicated on his World War II draft card of 07/02/1942 that his middle name was "George" not "Gustave."
