Airman, US Army Air Forces, 02/09/1943-10/15/1945. Ackley served as a turret gunner and engineer on a B-17 during the war. His plane was shot down over Italy. Ackley wrote an account of his World War II service in the book, Twenty-Seven and a Half Missions in the Fifteenth Air Force (New York: Vantage Press, 1996).
