His uncle lived across the street from his butcher shop, at 183 Saint Clair in 1875, the year of John Joseph's birth. (See Cleveland, Ohio, City Directory, 1875,p. 226.) George C. (See Detroit, Michigan, City Directory, 1889, p. 567.)

John Joseph Frauenfelder appeared in the Detroit, Michigan, CIty Directory, 1893, (p. 505), where he worked as a draftsman for W.S. Joy, Architect. Frauenfelder worked in at least four architectural offices in Detroit. He remained in that city until 1909, when, as newlyweds, he and his wife made a bold move, relocating to Los Angeles, CA.

In 1910, the US Census listed Frauenfelder and his wife, Kathleen, whom he married the previous August, living at 407 South Hope Street, Los Angeles, Apartment #111.(See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Year: 1910; Census Place: Los Angeles Assembly District 75, Los Angeles, California; Roll: T624_84; Page: 16B; Enumeration District: 0099; FHL microfilm: 1374097, accessed 04/02/2018.)

Frauenfelder, Retired Architect, Dies,” Tampa Bay Times, 09/10/1950, p. 16.) He was buried at the Royal Palm Cemetery, Saint Petersburg.

Parents

John's baptismal records and marriage license indicated that his father was George C. Frauenfelder (born 08/18/1845 in Germany-d. 12/30/1902 in Detroit, MI), his mother, Eliza or Elizabeth McCarty. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation: Archives of Ontario; Toronto, Ontario, Canada; Registrations of Marriages, 1869-1928; Reel: 139, accessed 07/08/2020.) They wed on 09/20/1866 in Cleveland, OH, when George was 22 years old. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation: Michigan Department of Community Health, Division for Vital Records and Health Statistics; Lansing, Michigan; Death Records, accessed 07/08/2020.)

Little is known of Eliza McCarty. She appears to have been in NY State c. 1848, and died before her husband, who passed away in 1902.

It is not clear whether George came from Birkenau, Hesse, Germany or Baden-Württemberg. The 1860 US Census listed him as originating in "Baden," while probably more reliable baptismal records listed his birthplace as Birkenau, to the north. (See Ancestry.com, Source Information: Ancestry.com. Hesse, Germany, Lutheran Baptisms, Marriages, and Burials, 1661-1957 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations, Inc., 2016., accessed 07/08/2020.)

The 1860 US Census noted that George lived with his elder brother, John, and that George was eleven years younger than he. Both men immigrated to the US from Baden, Germany. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation: Year: 1860; Census Place: Cleveland Ward 5, Cuyahoga, Ohio; Page: 288; Family History Library Film: 803952, accessed 07/08/2020.) George was naturalized in 1858. (See Ancestry.com, Source Information: Ancestry.com. Ohio, County Naturalization Records, 1800-1977 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations, Inc., 2014, accessed 07/08/2020.)

According to his father's death certificate, George Frauenfelder had nine children, six of whom were alive in 1902. At his death in 1950, John Joseph Frauenfelder t was survived by his brother, Joseph W. Frauenfelder of Detroit, MI, and a sister, Mrs. J.T. Townsend of Saint Petersburg, FL. Other siblings included Catherine T. Frauenfelder (born c. 1875 in OH), Ellen F. Frauenfelder and Mary B. Frauenfelder.

Spouse

He married Kathleen M. Gentleman Frauenfelder (born c. 1884 in Canada-d. 09/14/1936 in Los Angeles, CA) c. 1908. Her father, Frederick Gentleman, was English, her mother, Katherine Harmon, Irish. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation: Archives of Ontario; Toronto, Ontario, Canada; Registrations of Marriages, 1869-1928; Reel: 139, accessed 07/08/2020.)

Kathleen immigrated to the US, around 1903 probably from Toronto, ON, and remained an alien according to the 1910 US Census. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation: Year: 1910; Census Place: Los Angeles Assembly District 75, Los Angeles, California; Roll: T624_84; Page: 16B; Enumeration District: 0099; FHL microfilm: 1374097, accessed 07/07/2020.) They wed on 08/10/1909 in Toronto, where her parents resided. Both John and Kathleen lived in Detroit, MI, at the time of their marriage. Kathleen worked as a clerk in Detroit in 1908, boarding at 369 Cass Avenue. (See R.L. Polk and Company's Detroit, Michigan, City Directory, 1908, p. 1036.)

After her death, John Frauenfelder remained in Los Angeles for only four more years before moving to Saint Petersburg, FL, most likely to be near his sister who lived there.
