College
His secondary school education ended at grade 7, due to family circumstances. He educated himself well enough to try to enter the Iowa State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts after military service in the Spanish-American War. He was rejected more than once, but petitioned the governor, likely L.M. Shaw (1848-1932), that as a taxpaying citizen of IA, he had a right to a public education. The governor granted his request.
