Born in the Bronx, Maher lived for much of his life in the New York metropolitan region, although he traveled a significant amount for business. Maher and Sayer resided in a house that they designed in Ridgefield, CT, for 30 years. Maher died of cancer in Venice, Italy in 2008.

His parents were Francis and Anna Maher. His sister, Carol Maher Steel, survived him; she lived in Manhattan in 2008.

Eugene Mayer had 38-year relationship with the architect Peter D. Sayer, who was also his business partner since 1980. The two met each other while both worked in the NY office of the CA architect John Carl Warnecke (1919-2010).
