Professional History

Résumé

Partner, Jones and Jones, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Planning, Seattle, WA.

Jones has a part Cherokee-Choctaw Indian lineage; this background has been of profound inspiration to him in his design; according to the Jones and Jones firm profile of him: "...his design philosophy emerged from his Cherokee-Choctaw ancestors, which connects him to the natural world, animal world, spirit world, and human world." It continued: "Johnpaul has led the design of numerous cultural centers and museums with tribes spanning the North American continent, culminating in his 12-year engagement as overall lead design consultant for the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian on the Mall in Washington, D.C." (See "Johnpaul Jones FAIA,"accessed 06/07/2010.)

His statement on the Jones and Jones firm web site stated in 2019: "I am mostly interested in Indigenous Native American cultural planning and design. In our work we pay deep respect to regional architectural traditions that lead to the understanding of Indigenous people and their rich cultural heritage in America. Incorporating both the practical and the spiritual in planning and design helps heighten human sensitivity to cultural and environmental issues."
