Amos D. Lockwood began his working life for the Orleans Manufacturing Company of Rehoboth, RI, a firm that produced cotton fabrics. He became experienced in operating textile manufacturing plants. This led him to design and manage textile plants in New England and later the SC and other Southern states. While never relinquishing his interests in textile plants, Lockwood, by the 1870s developed an engineering business, at first focused on textile manufacturing plants. He formed A.D. Lockwood and Company in 1871 and took on two partners in 1882 to form Lockwood, Greene and Company in 1882. Lockwood died in 1884.
