Dougan received Oregon Architect License #0009 in late 1919. Member, American Institute of Architects (AIA).
Coursework, Kansas State Agricultural College, Manhattan, KS; B.Arch., Armour Institute of Technology, Chicago, IL, 1903.
Born in Princeton, IN, located in the southwestern part of the state, Lee Luther Dougan left home at age 15, traveled to Chicago, IL, and survived doing "odd jobs." (See Richard Ellison Ritz, Architects of Oregon, [Portland: Lair Hill Publishing, 2002], p. 108.) He attended college both at the Kansas State Agricultural College, Manhattan, KS, and the Armour Institute of Technology, Chicago, IL, graduating in 1903. He allegedly worked for Frank Lloyd Wright in Oak Park, IL. As a young man, Dougan worked in Vincennes, IN, Oklahoma City, OK, and Chicago, IL. He left Chicago in 1911, settling in Portland, OR. He worked here until 1965, when he retired from practice and lived in two locations, Garden Valley, ID, and Palos Verdes Estates, CA. He died in the latter location on 10/09/1983, just over two months past his 100th birthday. His body was returned to Portland for burial.
His parents were Albert F. and Martha Washington Dougan.
Dougan married twice.
A number of biographical details published on Dougan have proven contradictory; his middle name has been spelled variously as "Lee" and "Leigh." His location during the early 1900s is not clear, particularly when he resided in Oklahoma City and when, and if, he lived in Tulsa, OK. His arrival in Portland, OR, has been cited variously as 1903 and 1911. Dougan provided the former date, probably erroneously. It is also not clear when and where he worked as an office boy for Frank Lloyd Wright, if at all. To earn money during the Depression, Dougan produced illustrations for Ben Hur Lampman's "Oregon Wildlife Series" in the Oregonian newspaper in the 1930s.
