Personal

Born in Queens, NY, Kahn spent his youth in the New York City area. He migrated out to San Diego, CA, during the Depression to find employment in San Diego's naval shipyards. He served with the US Army Air Corps during the Second World War in England, servicing a squadron of bombers as a mechanic. He returned to the US in 1946, marrying that year and settling down in Los Angeles, CA. Following a productive career with the Los Angeles firm of Kappe, Kahn and Lottery, Architects, he relocated to Santa Cruz, CA, where he set up a private practice in 1974.

Herbert Kahn wed Erika Fluss in 1946. They later divorced. At Herbert Kahn's death in 2005, she lived in Carpinteria, CA.

With Erica Fluss Kahn, he had three sons: Cary, Philip, and Peter. At the death of their father, Cary lived in Santa Monica, CA, Philip in Paso Robles, CA, and Peter in Seattle, WA.
