In 1900, Clarence resided with his parents John and Mary on a farm in Ballona, CA. Others living on this farm included his maternal grandmother Sarah Merrick (born c. 09/1837 in PA), his two half-brothers and three brothers, and two household workers, Guadalupe Valdez (born c. 08/1878 in Los Angeles County, CA-d. 01/03/1910 in Sawtelle, Los Angeles, CA) and Aura (or Anna) West (born 07/1885 in KS). His father John Smale (born c/ 06/1850 in ON, Canada), a farmer, married twice. With his first wife, he had at least two sons.

His mother was Mary L. Merrick (born c. 10/1858 in PA).

Clarence had two half-brothers Edgar Smale (born c. 05/1875 in ON, Canada) and Ernest Smale (born 04/1879 in ON, Canada) and three brothers: John Smale (born 08/1888 in CA), Perry Smale (born c. 02/1891 in CA) and Lowell Smale (born c. 11/1896 in CA).

Spouse

He wed Rose M. Smale (born 07/30/1894 in Newfoundland, Canada 1889-d. 09/14/1972 in Los Angeles County, CA).

Children

Biographical Notes

His World War II draft registration card described Smale as being Caucasian with a light complexion, hazel eyes and gray hair. He stood 5-feet, 10-inches tall and weighed 195 pounds.
