Maher attended secondary schools in Indiana river town of New Albany; he started his professional training as an architect's apprentice with the architects [Augustus] Bauer and [Henry] Hill of Chicago, and concluded his education in the office of the Chicago architect, J. Lyman Silsbee in 1887; at this time, Frank Lloyd Wright also worked in Silsbee's office;
His son, Philip, joined the firm before World War I, and from 1921-1926, the firm was known as George W. Maher and Son, Architects.
Afflicted by depression, Maher committed suicide in Douglas, MI;
