His mother was Jennie Kirkwood (09/03/1858 in San Francisco, CA-d. 10/18/1941 in Long Beach, CA). His father, John David Davies (born 09/22/1859 in Saint Louis, MO-d. 06/17/1936 in Long Beach, CA), worked as an iron molder in 1900. Davies had a Welsh ancestry on his father's side.

Hugh had a sister Kathleen Davies Mason (born 02/15/1893 in CA-d. 07/13/1961 in Long Beach, CA).

Biographical Notes

As per his World War II draft registration card, Davies was Caucasian with a light and ruddy complexion. He stood 6 feet tall and weighed 200 pounds, and had hazel eyes and brown hair at age 47. The card noted that he had a scar at his right eye.
