The son of muralist Elmer E. Garnsey, Julian (born 1887) was born in New York City. After majoring in architectural design at Harvard University, he studied art privately in Paris. For 10 years he assisted his father in painting murals. He moved to southern California after serving in World War I. He did murals in Hawaii in addition to those in downtown Los Angeles. Between 1942 and 1946 he taught at Princeton University. He also was director of the Beaux Arts Institute of Design."
