This giant firm, synonymous with Modern architecture in the U.S., began in Chicago, IL, and expanded to include offices across the country. It has operated offices in Portland, OR, Los Angeles, CA, and San Francisco, CA.
The predecessor firm was Skidmore and Owings which operated between 1936 and 1939.
In 1962, SOM had an office at 30 West Monroe Street in Chicago.
By 1970, founding partner Nathaniel Owings had transplanted himself to work and live in Northern CA.
