The founders of the PAE Consulting Engineers broke off from the Portland branch of the large architecture and engineering firm, Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, whose head office was in Chicago, IL. The PAE website said in 2025 of its history: "In 1967, Harold “Pete” Peterson, Sid Nielsen, and two other engineers left the Portland office of industry giant Skidmore Owings and Merrill (SOM) to establish Peterson Associated Engineers. An innovator from the beginning, PAE was the first engineering firm in Portland with integrated mechanical and electrical design." (See PAE

The firm's name changed from "Peterson Associated Engineers" to "PAE Consulting Engineers" in 1986.

PAE opened its lighting division, Luma Lighting Design, in 2001.

In 2010, the firm founded an office in San Francisco, CA, followed by branches in Seattle, WA (2013) and Eugene, OR, (2014). A San Francisco office opened in 2016. PAE had 225 employees by the time of its 50th anniversary in 2017.

During the 2020s, offices in Spokane, WA, and Los Angeles, CA, were founded. In 2025, upper-level officers of PAE Engineers included Christian J. Agulles (also President and Chief Executive Officer), Marco Alves, Trevor Boz, Tom Burroughs, Shiloh Butterworth (Chief People Officer), Brian Coffield, Grant Craig (Senior Partner), Debbie Grieves, Mohammed Haq, Michelle Johnson, Steve Kelly, Dawn MacFayden, Claire Maxfield, Allan Montpellier (Senior Principal and Chief Innovation Officer), Stephen Scaife, Harjot Sidhu, Justin Stenkamp, Daniella Wahler, David Williams (Senior Principal) and Bradley Wilson (Senior Principal). Between 2017 and 2025, PAE went from 5 offices and 225 employees to 12 offices and over 350 employees.
