Engineer Robert W. Beck founded his eponymous firm in 1942 in Columbus, NB, offering consulting engineering services for public power utilities. The firm became a partnership known as "R.W. Beck and Associates," in 1954. The firm built a solid business consulting on hydroelectric projects and electric power systems and developed a speciality in construction management. Environmental activism in the 1960s enlarged the market for wastewater management and water treatment plants, and, during the 1970s, Beck diversified into solid waste management. At its height in the early 2000s, Beck employed about 650, primarily mechanical, electrical, and civil engineers, with a smaller number of environmental and chemical, specialists. In 07/2009, the VA-based government contractor Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) purchased R.W. Beck, Incorporated, for $155 million.
