Victor D. Gruen formed his own comprehensive architectural, engineering and planning office in Los Angeles in 1951. He established it following his divorce from Elise Krummeck, with whom he worked primarily designing retail stores in New York, Los Angeles and elsewhere between 1940 and 1948.
In 1968, Gruen decided to move back to Vienna, where he founded multiple practices. Victor Gruen Associates became known simply as "Gruen Associates" after 1968
In 1970, Gruen Associates had offices in Los Angeles, CA (headquarters), New York, NY, and Washington, DC. Other leading members of Gruen Associates in 1970 included: Cesar Pelli, Daniel M. Branigan, William H. Dahl and Abbott Harle.
In 1973, the Washington, DC, office moved to 910 16th Street NW. (See "Notes," Progressive Architecture, vol. LIV, no. 3, 03/1973, p. 138.)
