Neptune and Thomas founded their partnership in Pasadena, CA, in 1953; they opened a second office in San Diego, CA, which would later become the headquarters of Neptune and Thomas's successor firms. This firm originated by Donald Neptune and Joseph Thomas in 1953 in Pasadena, CA, grew into this large practice headquartered in San Diego, CA. The firm was known first as "Neptune and Thomas, Architects, AIA," from 1953-c. 1960; it changed its name to "Neptune and Thomas Associates," c. 1960. In 1970, this firm had three offices in Southern California: 1560 East Colorado Boulevard, Pasadena, CA, 91105: 742 Colorado Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA, 90041; 2901 5th Avenue, San Diego, CA, 92103.

Neptune and Thomas Associates continued under this name until 1989, when it merged with Davis-Duhaime Associates to form "Neptune, Thomas and Davis, Architects," (later referred to as "NTD.") NTD merged with The Stichler Group in 2004 when it became known as "NTDStichler Architecture," and retained this appellation until 2007. In that year, it renamed itself "NTD Architecture."
