Firm Notes

The California Bridge and Building Company was headquartered in Oakland, CA, c. 1875. In the late 19th century, engineers did not maintain private practices or consultantships like they would in the twentieth. As a result, large and complex public works were often constructed by private contractors with expertise working on bridges, tunnels, and other extensive infrastructure projects. Often, individuals working for these engineer-based firms had had experience working for railroads building bridges, laying track or building roadbeds in difficult terrain. Before the age of the professional engineer consultantships, companies like the California Bridge and Building Company obtained the commissions for big public jobs.

In 1899, another firm known as the "California Bridge and Construction Company" was in operation in the Bay Area.
