Theodore Starrett, Sr., (1865-1917 )and Henry Soffe Thompson (1874-1947) founded the company in New York, NY in 1899. Thompson-Starrett was selected to be the general contractor for the Woolworth Building (1913) in New York, NY. After the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake and FIre, Thompson-Starrett opened a San Francisco office, to get its share of rebuilding work. In 11/1906, it had an office at 2053 Sutter Street, with Allan Pollok, Frank Kilpatrick and B.C. Dickinson in charge.
W.S. Sample served as the Portland-based, Northwest Representative of this construction company in 1910. The firm was a Patron of the Seattle Architectural Club in 1910.
The firm became a diversified conglomerate by the 1960s, absorbing a scientific instruments company and renamng itself "TST Industries, Incorporated." By 06/1968, TST merged with the Elgin Watch Company of Elgin, IL, to form Elgin National Industries.
