Firm Notes
This firm began operations in Cleveland, OH, in 1878. President Wilbert J. Austin (1876-1940) died in an airplane accident in 1940. His firm was one of the first to collaborate on projects with the Soviet Union during its Five-Year Plan of the early 1930s.
The Austin Company grew into one of the largest construction firms in the U.S. by the mid-twentieth century, and had offices in a number of West Coast cities. One subsidiary was the Austin Company of California. In 1930, the Austin Company of CA had its office at 777 East Washington Street in Los Angeles.
It operated independently until 2005, when it was bought by the Rochelle Park, NJ-based Kajima USA Incorporated.
