Active 1920-1979
James Addison Jones (b. 1869 in NC) founded his construction company in Charlotte, NC, during the 1890s. The firm built Charlotte's first skyscraper, the 12-story Independence Building, in which he later obtained office space. Legally incorporated in 1920 as the "J.A. Jones Construction Company, Incorporated," it operated independently until 1979, when it merged itself into a parent company, Philipp Holzmann AG, based in Frankfurt-am-Main, Germany. Holzmann struggled with financial problems during the late 1990s, and went bankrupt in 2002. Its interests tied to the failed Holzmann, J.A. Jones was liquidated in 2003.
