Rosenthal designed the $500,000, 8-story Granada Building and its theatre for Edward A. Johnson. The theatre was originally to have seated approximately 2,000 patrons (when built, it actually accommodated 1,870), with the first floor occupied by a mezzanine, six retail spaces, and the theatre lobby. The upper six floors were intended as offices for doctors and dentists. It opened on 04/09/1924. In recent years, the Granada Theatre has been the home of the Santa Barbara Civic Light Opera.
In the 1930s, Warner Brothers operated four movie theatres in Santa Barbara: the Granada, California, Mission, and Rose. Tel: 805-966-2324 (2007).
The single screen theatre was divided into three in 1981; the main auditorium then held 910, while the two balcony spaces each accommodated 225. These two upper screens were removed in 2004.
