Fund-raising for this $52.6 million museum went at a snail's pace, with the institution being left without a home for over 7 years. Ground was ceremonially broken for the new facility 10/21/2005, with little progress made as of 2007. In 2009, the museum worked with museum designer Edwin Schlossberg for the planning of the new 57,000 building, which was not yet open as of 08/21/2009.
