This hotel was built on the site of the first artist's studio in the city, that of Sidney J. Yard; another artist, DeNeale Morgan, later used these quarters. In the contractor, Hugh Comstock, built the Spanish Colonial Hotel La Ribera for owner, Dr. Rudolf Kocher. Its name was changed subsequently to the Cypress Inn.
Movie star, Doris Day, became part-owner of this hotel in 1985. In 2007, she owned the property with Dennis LeVett.
