The popularity of outlet malls, shopping centers in which more than one-half of the tenants sell close-out and damaged merchanidise, dipped slightly between 1996 and 2004-2005; in 1996, outlet malls numbered 329, while this fell to 225 in 2004-2005 as regional markets reached saturation. Prior to the 1990s, manufacturer outlet stores frequently operated as separate lcoations, perhaps scattered neat to one another. The shops, increasingly, became clustered in larger mall configurations, with central food courts like conventional suburban destinations.
