In the oldest portion of this factory, the Los Angeles Paper Manufacturing Company produced dry felt and paper for the construction industry, and was said to be the oldest manufacturer of paper in Southern California. The company was founded on 01/04/1901 by Joseph Brown, Sr. (b. 01/04/1838).

This plant was enlarged in 1926. The new portion of the factory was built to produce ready roofing, composition shingles, building paper and mulch papers. It was estimated that this new addition could manufacture 75 tons per day of asphalt saturated felt for roofing products. Previously, the company turned out just raw materials and not finished roofing products.
