Controversy surrounded the Seattle Plumbing Building in 07/2007, when a developer, Nitze-Stagen, sought to add four stories (110 feet) to the top of this two-story warehouse. Niteze-Stagen wanted to develop the building into 82 condominiums, three live-work lofts, and assorted retail spaces. Preservationists and neighbors objected to the height addition as being out of character for the Pioneer Square Historic District (created in 1970).
