Construction crews building a highway unearthed a petrified grove of gingko trees in the 1930s on this site. Because petrified gingko specimens were uncommon, this site was preserved as a state park.
This 7,470-acre park featured a 1.4-mile long interpretive trail. A number of buildings in the park were built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC).
