John William Stacey (d. 1943) opened a bookstore in San Francisco's Flood Building in 1923, initially focusing on medical books, but over the years becoming a significant retailer and publisher of books in the Bay Area. The store's fortunes grew during the 1920s-1950s, when it became a small chain of stores throughout CA, including branches in Palo Alto, Richmond, Cupertino, Modesto, San Bernardino and Los Angeles. Outgrowing its first, 216-square-foot location, Stacey's moved to larger quarters at 551 Market Street. Unfortunately, Chevron bought this location in the late 1950s to build its new San Francisco headquarters the following year. A short move then occurred to 581 Market Street. This third San Francisco store opened in 1959. The Stacey's chain was purchased by library supply giant Brodart Company in the 1970s. The final Stacey's location, the San Francisco flagship store, closed on 03/17/2009.
Over the years this 581 Market Street store underwent several remodelings, the most recent in 1996.
