The school is named for J. Douglas Adams, born in Brentwood, CA, who taught at the elementary, middle and high school levels, and later became Assistant Superintendant of the Martinez (CA) School District. He assumed the superintendantship of the Brentwood Unified School District c. 1991.

The Adams Middle School cost $34,390,346 to complete and contained 87,492 square feet.
