AKA: Nairobi Village Shopping Center, East Palo Alto, CA
Structure Type: built works - commercial buildings - shopping centers
Designers: [unspecified]
Dates: constructed 1957
This shopping was built in 1957, just before the opening of the widened and expanded Bayshore Expressway in the late 1950s and early 1960s. The expansion of a divided Bayshore Freeway separated East Palo Alto from Palo Alto, leaving disastrous economic circumstances. As a result, the University Village Shopping Center, lying by 1960 east of a huge traffic impediment, could not attract customers from west of the highway. Failing, the center was renamed Nairobi Village Shopping Center in the late 1960s, at a time when African-American residents sought to change the city's name to Nairobi. The abandoned center was demolished in 1989, after it had become associated with drugs and violence.
Demolished in 1989.
